The evolution and development of the Healthy Kids programme and our journey so far.

A Brief Overview

Healthy Kids Programme — Evolution & Development

Objectives

  • To cultivate an interest in physical activity, sports and healthy lifestyle habits among children from the primary school level.
  • To promote a balanced lifestyle that combines recreation with knowledge, health awareness, and social responsibility.
  • To nurture future generations into healthy, responsible, and socially conscious citizens.

Why?

The present generation is increasingly affected by the excessive use of mobile phones and other digital devices, which negatively impacts their health, attention span, endurance, behaviour, and overall lifestyle. Children are gradually moving towards a sedentary way of life, resulting in reduced physical activity and declining mental well-being, which has become a matter of serious concern.

What is Healthy Kids?

The Healthy Kids Programme is designed to enhance the physical, mental, and social development of children. Through games and enjoyable activities, the programme aims to foster healthy lifestyle habits, coordination skills, concentration, endurance, and social responsibility among children.

How?

The programme was developed by effectively utilizing Physical Training (PT) periods in primary schools to increase children’s interest in sports and physical activities, thereby creating a solid foundation for physical fitness and mental stability at a younger age.

A classroom in each participating primary school is transformed into a Smart Green Game Room, equipped with specially designed play and fitness equipment. The programme is implemented through scientific training methodologies, digital monitoring systems, a mobile application for daily activities, and teacher-guided instructional support. Children participate in enjoyable activities while unknowingly improving their physical and mental well-being.

Programme Development

The Healthy Kids Programme originated from a directive issued by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs to utilize funds associated with the 2015 National Games for implementing a project called “Play for Health.”

Play for Health – Pilot Phase

As part of the pilot phase, equipment was installed in five selected schools. Detailed studies were conducted on equipment usage, children’s participation, and training methodologies. These studies revealed that appropriate training was required for the effective use of each equipment item, and both teachers and students needed proper guidance on its usage.

To facilitate the training programme, an agency was identified and a dedicated training team was formed. Training sessions were conducted during the first academic year; however, the outcomes were found to be less satisfactory than expected.

Subsequently, a committee comprising experts from various sports disciplines was formed to redesign the training programme. The committee concluded that the programme should focus on:

  • Overall physical fitness enhancement
  • Coordination skills development
  • Strength and endurance building
  • Learning through recreation
  • Strengthening the foundations of physical, mental, cognitive, and social development

Challenges Identified

During implementation, several challenges emerged:

  • PT periods in many schools were being used for other academic activities.
  • There was a shortage of Physical Education teachers.
  • Children's interest in physical activities was declining.
  • Climate change resulted in excessive heat and unpredictable rainfall, limiting outdoor activities.
  • Excessive use of digital devices was leading children towards sedentary lifestyles and increased mental stress.

These observations highlighted that children’s natural energy and enthusiasm could be effectively channelled through enjoyable and engaging activities, significantly improving their attention, participation, and motivation.

Development of Special Drills

Based on these findings, several child-friendly drills and activities were developed, focusing on:

  • Total Body Fitness
  • Coordination Skills
  • Cardiovascular Health

It was also recognized that providing such training before the age of ten could significantly increase children’s interest in recreational and professional sports later in life.

Equipment Modernization and Expansion

Accordingly, major improvements and modifications were made to the equipment. Adequate design and functional changes were incorporated into digital games to become more child friendly and productive, and the programme was expanded to 25 schools. The entire drill schedule was revamped to provide more benefits to the enrolled students and ease of execution for teachers.

Colourful and attractive equipment was distributed to all 25 schools. To protect the equipment from dust and moisture, dedicated classrooms were selected and converted into Smart Game Rooms.

Healthy Kids Programme Expansion

In 2022, the programme was expanded to an additional 30 schools across Kerala. The realtime online training application was upgraded to a realtime monitoring tool by including a feedback collection and assessment module for each performing child.

As children engaged in these enjoyable activities, their physical fitness, coordination skills, and overall health improved naturally.

The mobile application was subsequently upgraded into a more interactive and comprehensive platform, incorporating:

  • Advanced digital games
  • Individual performance analysis
  • Student progress reports
  • Development tracking and assessment systems

Inclusion of Aerobics and Life Skills

To further improve cardiovascular health, aerobics was incorporated into the programme. The programme also evolved into a platform for promoting:

  • Mental well-being
  • Civic awareness
  • Discipline
  • Social behaviour
  • Leadership and organizational skills
  • Enhancing cognitive capabilities

Teachers reported noticeable improvements in:

  • Students' concentration levels
  • Classroom participation
  • Interest in learning
  • Academic engagement

Maintenance and Sustainability

Special training was provided to teachers and support staff responsible for cleaning and maintaining the equipment at regular intervals.

To ensure long-term sustainability, it was decided that monitoring, management, and training support should continue for a minimum of five years in each school. Considering the frequent transfer of teachers, dedicated monitoring staff were appointed for handling the teachers in every PT period to improve effectiveness in project implementation.

These monitoring staff participate online in daily class sessions, evaluate activities, and provide guidance and support to teachers.

After five years of continuous support, schools are expected to independently integrate the programme into their regular curriculum and continue its implementation without external assistance.

Present Status and Future Vision

Today, the Healthy Kids Programme has expanded to approximately 55 schools across Kerala.

The future vision is to extend the programme to all LP (Lower Primary) schools in Kerala by leveraging:

  • Government funding
  • MLA Development Funds
  • MP Development Funds
  • Local Self-Government Funds
  • Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Funds

Even if each Panchayat sponsors just one school annually, it is anticipated that the programme can reach all schools in Kerala within the next five years.

Conclusion

The Healthy Kids Programme integrates play, movement, happiness, scientific training, mental health, discipline, and civic sense to ensure the holistic development of children.

By nurturing an interest in physical activity from an early age, the programme is evolving into a long-term social intervention aimed at building a healthier and more responsible generation. It contributes to the physical, mental, and social development of future generations while helping create a healthier and more responsible society.

Therefore, the Healthy Kids Programme is not merely an initiative for today’s children; it is a valuable investment in the health, human resource development, and future prosperity of Kerala.
